What Are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are wonderful esthetician treatments offered by Dr. Healy that are used to exfoliate, lighten areas of hyper pigmentation, repair and reduce breakouts, control oil, soften lines, and provide a smoother and more even skin texture.

We offer different types of peels depending on your skin issues and expectations. The peels available at our med spa include (from gentlest to strongest):

  • Illuminizing Peel
  • Vitalize Peel
  • Rejuvenize Peel

Please remember – not all of our chemical peels cause your skin to “peel” – the chemical peels are working effectively even when your skin does not slough off.

Illuminizing Chemical Peel

The Illuminizing Peel is a red carpet chemical peel that gives you the effect of a chemical peel without the downtime of peeling.

Vitalize Chemical Peel

The Vitalize Peel is a powerful peel that is safe and has little to no downtime or irritation. It is effective for all skin types and addresses hyper pigmentation, post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation, melasma, and photodamage.

Rejuvenating Chemical Peel

The Rejuvenating Peel by Skin Medica penetrates deep into the surface layers of the skin, and begins working almost instantly to deliver even, radical exfoliation and expose fresher, more beautiful looking skin.

Ideal Candidates for Chemical Peels

If you are aiming to reduce visible damage and achieve a smoother complexion, then you may be a good candidate for a chemical peel. This resurfacing treatment is ideal for people who want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, melasma, redness, uneven skin tone, and sun damage.

This treatment may not be recommended for people with darker complexions, since it may result in uneven skin tone. Those who use retinoids or are prone to keloid scarring should ask our skin-care professional first, since they may be discouraged to undergo this treatment.

If you are pregnant or are planning to conceive in the next few months, you may be asked to delay this treatment until after you have given birth.

Your Consultation

Your consultation for a chemical peel at Healy Plastic Surgery involves an evaluation of your skin. This physical examination is important in developing the best treatment plan for you.

Our skin-care expert will also ask you about your medical history, skin-care routine, and current medications. Express your expectations and desired outcome, and be sure to ask any questions you may have.

The Procedure

The first step in a chemical peel is skin cleansing. The treatment will then be applied onto your skin. You will notice that the solution will change to a white or gray color, depending on the type of peel you are getting.

For light peels, a wash or neutralizing solution may be added afterwards. For medium peels, cold compresses will be applied, along with a handheld fan to help cool off your skin. No neutralizing solution will be added. For deep peels, you may need to be sedated, and the solution will be applied in intervals of 15 minutes.

During chemical peel treatments, it is normal to feel stinging or a slight burning sensation. The whole procedure may take 20 to 90 minutes depending on the depth of the peel.

Recovery and Aftercare

After your chemical peel treatment, you may need a little downtime or recovery time, especially after a deep peel. Light and medium peels may take seven days to two weeks to recover from with minimal discomfort and slight discoloration.

For deep peels, you may experience swelling, redness, and a throbbing sensation. It usually takes two weeks or more to heal from deep peeling treatments.

If your skin starts to peel, do not pull off the peeling skin. Make sure to avoid prolonged sun exposure and to apply sunscreen every day. Use a fan or ice packs at home to manage any discomfort.

Cost of Chemical Peels

The cost of chemical peels depends on the treatment depth recommended to yield the best results based on your concerns. The overall price will be affected by anesthetic fees, as well as the type of solution used.
