Brazilian Butt Lift

What Is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) is a procedure that involves taking fat from other parts of the body and transferring the fat to the buttocks. This can improve the shape, size, and contour of the buttock region. Transferring fat from one area of the body to another also can also help to bring balance to the proportions of the figure which can enhance the overall appearance of their body.

The fat for a BBL is harvested from an area of the body with an excess amount of fat. The typical areas used are the stomach, back, hips, and thighs. The fat is harvested through liposuction and then purified and processed so that it can be safely injected into the buttocks.

Candidates for a Brazilian Butt Lift

In general, if you are unhappy with the size and shape of your buttocks, you may be a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift. BBL is a good procedure for patients that have unwanted fat in areas of the body such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, etc., and would like to add volume to the butt. The fat is your own tissue so the results can look and feel very natural. BBL is also great for patients who are not comfortable with the idea of getting implants. During your consultation, Dr. Healy will examine your body, ask about the specific issues you want to address, and go over your medical history to help determine if you are a good candidate for a BBL.

Brazilian Butt Lift Results

The transferred fat has to re-establish its blood supply after it has been moved to the buttocks. We know that not all of the fat cells will survive the transfer process in the long term. Estimates range from 50-70% of fat cells will survive. The fat cells that don’t survive will eventually be absorbed by the body but sometimes firm nodules can form around the non-viable fat cells.

Recovering from a Brazilian Butt Lift

Recovery after a BBL procedure is quite regimented. You will not be able to sit down or lie on your back or sides for two weeks after surgery. This means you will be standing a lot and lying on your abdomen when sleeping. After two weeks you will be allowed to sit but must use pillows to cushion the buttocks. The reason for these restrictions is to avoid putting pressure on the transferred fat cells. If the fat cells have pressure on them, they will not be able to establish a blood supply and will die. This will diminish the long-term results of your procedure.

Weight fluctuations after a BBL will affect the size and shape of your buttocks. When you lose weight the fat cells become smaller and the volume will diminish. When you gain weight the fat cells will get bigger which can lead to uneven contours.

Butt Implants

What are Butt Implants?

Another option for buttock enhancement is to use implants. This is a similar concept to breast implants but there are some important differences. The implants used for buttock enhancement are a soft, solid silicone which means the implant cannot leak. Breast implants use a cohesive gel silicone which over time can leak and will need to be replaced. Scar formation (capsular contracture) is less likely with a butt implant compared to breast implants.

The implants are placed through a small incision in the gluteal cleft which makes the scars almost imperceptible. The implants are placed in an “intramuscular plane” between the gluteus maximus and medius muscles. This placement allows for a very natural look and feel.

Recovery after butt implants is not quite as regimented as after a BBL. Sitting will still be restricted for the first two weeks but you are allowed to lie on your back and sides. You will be allowed to resume exercising after 6-8 weeks.

The ideal candidate for butt implants is a patient that wants increased size and projection of the buttock region but is relatively thin and doesn’t have enough fat to have a successful BBL. Many of our patients here in Hawaii fit into this category. Because of this, Dr. Healy decided to start offering butt implants for his patients. There are only a handful of plastic surgeons who specialize in butt implants, so Dr. Healy went to Beverly Hills and trained with one of the world’s leading experts on butt implants to learn the techniques that will optimize results. The butt implant procedure is now being offered to our patients at Healy Plastic Surgery and is the only practice offering butt implants in Hawaii.

Cellfina

What Is Cellfina?

Cellfina is a procedure to permanently remove cellulite. Cellulite occurs in the buttock and thigh regions due to fibrous bands that connect the undersurface of the skin to deeper tissues. These band cause indentations and dimpling of the skin which can be unsightly and embarrassing especially in Hawaii where shorts and bikinis are normal attire.

Cellfina is the only FDA approved minimally invasive procedure to provide long term improvement in the appearance of cellulite. This is a new technology and Dr. Healy is happy to be the first in Hawaii to offer this treatment. Weight loss and exercise do not improve the appearance of cellulite because they do not address the underlying cause. The procedure specifically targets the bands that cause cellulite. The bands are mechanically released causing the dimples to disappear.

What to Expect After Your Cellfina Treatment

The procedure is minimally invasive meaning general anesthesia is not required. Local anesthetic is utilized to ensure comfort during the procedure. Patients may also elect to take a mild sedative by mouth prior to the procedure if desired.

Results from Cellfina become apparent within a few days and the exciting thing about Cellfina is that the results continue to improve with time. There will be some minor bruising and swelling after treatment. There is minimal downtime and patients can resume full exercise activity within two weeks.
